    Garcia outlasts Hubbard in the final 5 km to take home the gold

    Anne Riddle pulls away from Ann Heaslett in final 10 miles to seal a victory

    The temperatures never rose above 20 degrees today in Huntington, IN, where it took Jim Garcia (Westford, MA) a come-from-behind effort in the last 5 km to claim the gold medal over second place Charles Hubbard (Bloomington, MN). His 3:39:13 outpaced Hubbard's 3:41:02 silver-medal effort on a 50km course that is actually measured at 32.4 miles. The 20 mph wind dropped wind chills close to zero for much of the day.  Defending H.U.F.F. champion, Mark Godale (Streesboro, OH) took home the bronze. 

    In the women's race, Anne Riddle (Asheville, NC) ran much of the first 20+ miles only a few strides ahead of Ann Heaslett (Madison, WI).  She would cushion her lead in the final lap of this 3-lap race around the Huntington Reservoir, finishing with a gold medal in 4:16:31 and only holding off Ann by a few minutes, who took home the silver in 4:20:49.  Anong Pustow, from Louisville, KY, showed strong reserve in taking home the bronze, in 4:30:57.
