Headlands 50km
1/8/2002: Headlands 50K Selected as 2002 USA National 50km Trail Championship
The organizers of the Golden Gate Headlands 50K, and Tamalpa Runners, are pleased to announce that the USATF has selected this race as the 2002 National 50K Trail Championship.

GGH50K will be held Saturday, August 24, in the coastal headlands a few miles north of San Francisco.  For those unfamiliar with the course, the race starts on a beach at dawn.  It then winds its way northward through the Golden Gate National Recreation area and Tamalpais State Park, eventually looping back to the start along fireroads and single-track trails that parallel the ocean.  As the finish line gets closer, the hills
get steeper and the views get better.

The race has always tried to accommodate the back of the pack, as well as the rest of the runners, with generous cutoffs and enthusiastic support along the course.  We expect to continue that tradition this year, and in addition, look forward to a national-class contest at the front, with a deep field that will make Headlands 2002 one of the strongest 50K events ever run on trails in California.

The general format of the race will follow that of previous years, with a few changes still being worked out.  The web site is at www.headlands50k.org, and will be updated within a couple of months with additional information. We also expect to have an ad in the March issue of UR, and will post to the Ultra list periodically.

We're excited about putting on this race and invite you to consider running it!
